Hello! My name is Macy.
I’m a senior currently finishing up a bachelor’s degree in Multimedia Journalism at Drake University with plans to head to grad school. Once I make my way there, I’d like to continue honing my craft as a writer while pursuing publication, and become qualified to teach what I love most (writing).
Though my family has deep roots in Iowa, I have lived in six states (with a large portion of my time spent in Phoenix, AZ). It was in Arizona that I completed an associate’s degree in Creative Writing at Paradise Valley Community College, transferring to Drake soon after.
Studies at Home…
As an undergrad student with two degrees (an associate’s degree in Creative Writing and a bachelor’s in Journalism nearly complete), my education has made me flexible and multi-disciplined.
While my foundation in Creative Writing taught me to approach my work with imagination, transitioning fields taught me to turn imagination into innovation by training in skills required to synthesize and deliver valuable information to the public in a timely, ethical manner.
In grad school, I’d like to make a return to Creative Writing and study both poetry and creative nonfiction in a focused, challenging environment. I believe my training as a journalist has uniquely prepared me for this return — art is often best when truthful, and unflinching.
At both PVCC and Drake, I had the opportunity to tutor my peers and work for student publications — in grad school, I hope to continue exercising these muscles so they may be even stronger upon entering the workforce fully.

… & Studies Abroad
During the fall semester of 2026, I took the opportunity to study abroad at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. Through this program, I took courses in British literature, history and intercultural communication.
This lead me from the Brontë family parsonage in Haworth, to Shakespeare’s Globe in London, to the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln, and even all the way to Romania — well, virtual Romania, that is. I led an online group of students from America, Romania, Okinawa and Ecuador in a virtual project dedicated to building communication skills that surpass the boundaries of linguistic and cultural differences.
Over the entire course of my time overseas, I was able to visit each country in the United Kingdom (in the flesh, to be clear).
Outside the Classroom
When I’m not doing homework, I try to focus on things that not only bring me joy, but broaden my life in ways that benefit my work as a writer. This can range from knitting (socks are hard!) to playing guitar, and always involves voracious reading. But, most importantly, it includes dedicating time to people I love.
Living life to the fullest fuels what I do, and pushes me closer to the writer I want to become. Being a lifelong learner and record-keeper is both my vocation and lifestyle, whether those records are kept in poetry or headlines. (Or, I suppose, socks).
Follow along!
On this website, you’ll find posts covering my endeavors as a writer and student, as well as updates on where I’m headed. My portfolio holds samples of my poetry, and other similar clips or links. With time, I have plans to establish a newsletter on Substack, as well as provide bite-sized bits on X. Until then, drop me some comments right here, and forgive me for going over my max word count.
